On November 10, 2021, the 2021 Conference of the Tsinghua-UNSW Joint Research Centre for International Commercial and Economic Law (JCICEL) was successfully held online. Associate Professors Zhang Chenying and Gao Simin of THU School of Law, Professor Deborah Healy, Professor Ross Buckley, Professor Heng Wang, Associate Professor Kun Fan, Associate Professor Weihuan Zhou, and Assistant Professor Lu Wang of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Law & Justice, Dr. Mao Zhiqi of Ant Group and Dr. Raphael Auer, Chief Economist of Innovation and Electronic Economy Department of Bank for International Settlements attended the meeting.
This annual meeting consisted of two sessions, two parts, themed "New Trends of Regulation and Merger Control of State-owned Enterprises" and "Trends of Digital Currency and Science and Technology Supervision" respectively.
The first session of the conference was hosted by Associate Professor Kun Fan from UNSW Law & Justice. Associate Professor Weihuan Zhou from UNSW Law & Justice first talked about China's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP) and the reform of state-owned enterprises. From the perspective of China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, Dr. Lu Wang shared the information about state-owned enterprises in international investment agreements. Next, Professor Deborah Healy and Associate Professor Zhang Chenying respectively reported on the digital development of Australian competition law and the development of competition law in China's digital market.
The second session of the conference was hosted by Associate Professor Gao Simin of THU School of Law, with a focus on the latest developmental trend of digital currency and science and technology supervision. First, Professor Ross Buckley explained the background, form and system of developing the central bank digital currency. Subsequently, Dr. Mao Zhiqi from Ant Group shared insights on the scientific and technological supervision issues in the digital economy era from a practical point of view. Professor Heng Wang shared with the audience the research results on the digital currency system of the central bank and its impact on supervision that he and Associate Professor Gao Simin had completed together. Finally, Dr Raphael Auer of the Bank for International Settlements introduced the developmental trend of digital currency of the central bank, and its relationship with individual users from the perspective of financial institutions.
The conference concluded successfully with a warm question-and-answer session.
The Tsinghua-UNSW Joint Research Centre for International Commercial and Economic Law (JCICEL) was established in 2019 by THU School of Law and University of New South Wales (UNSW) Law & Justice. With the in-depth development of global economic and trade cooperation and ever-changing financial innovation, the JCICEL aims to cope with the new situation and issues of international trade arising from the change and development of domestic and international economic environments by promoting research cooperation between Chinese and foreign scholars on international commercial and economic law and jointly training top-notch talents in international commercial and economic law.
